Ok, Rhythm is a proper Oldskool Piano monster. The intro sees a cut up Blame beat and some little scratch inserts. A trademark Stu & Nee piano line kicks in and the diva vocals layer nicely over the top. I’ll be honest with you, this track didn’t grab me at the start, but I’m liking the bubbly bass and the hoover-type juno stabs. Overall, this has a very oldskool feel to it, and is a solid tune that will please purists and ladies alike. Which is very different to….
Lucifers Code. Again, S&N show us their versatility with a totally up to date hardcore breaks runner. Slightly increasing the tempo and going a little darker on us. This tune is the tune of the EP for me. It’s a roller, simple stab patterns and newer sounding than the rest of the EP. The string section in the middle is quality, and breaks the track up nicely, whilst maintaining the atmosphere of the track. I think this may start a different style of Hardcore Breaks, which is very very good indeed. ‘HorrorBreaks’ hehe…. I digress.
Onto new signing Renegade Genius, and his little number, ‘TigerClaw’. Again, quite a moody dark track with some good quality kung-fu samples over the top. This is a very well produced track that is pretty dark, growling bass and lots of filtering. Still, the beats are again, oldskool sounding, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that again, a solid tune can be made using a mix of todays technology, and oldskool influences. Watch out for the cheeky acid line in this one, works well.
Ok, last track on the EP, Stu Chapman created a favourite with a lot of people when he did Just Like Boom on EM002, so he called in DJ Deluxe from the awesome Kniteforce Records to give it the remix treatment. (I actually heard that Deluxe paid Stu for the remix in his own special way… but thats a different story). Deluxe has been quiet just recently, but he’s back with a remix that stays faithful to the original, whilst bringing it up to date. I notice there’s a cheeky amen added, and the riffs have been progressed. A new piano section in the middle is just fantastic, and the chopped up vocal snatches give this track a little more energy than the original. Watch out for the whining hoovers, and the pan pipes…..
Overall, this is a solid, excellently produced release that has something for everyone. Enormous mouse once again deliver the goods, and this should be considered to be a definite purchase.
